Who is suitable for laser surgery?
- The first requirement is that YOU want to see better, not because someone else thinks you should have it done or for any other reason. You should never feel pressured into having elective surgery performed by anyone including aggressive advertising and marketing
- You need to be at least 18 years of age. There is no upper age limit although there are often better options available to the older patient.
- You need to demonstrate a reasonably stable refraction (glasses prescription) over the previous one year
- Your eyes need to be healthy so this excludes conditions where the cornea is too thin, there is surface disease or the eyes are dry and do not respond to therapeutic measures to remedy this. All these conditions will be excluded by the consultant ophthalmologist doing your suitability assessment
- There are some general health issues that also impact on your eyes and their health and recovery powers. Uncontrolled diabetes, some collagen vascular disorders, pregnancy and breast-feeding are all contra-indications. Again, these will all be discussed with you at the assessment with your consultant ophthalmologist
- Nothing can replace an evaluation at the Wellington Eye Clinic with a consultant ophthalmologist. You may have found to be suitable elsewhere only to hear that you are not suitable as far as we are concerned. More often than not however, the converse is true. Because of our expertise and technology, we can often treat patients that have been deemed unsuitable elsewhere.
