Ray Tracing Study

Do you qualify?

Every now and then, a new technique (or improvement in a current technique) is introduced to the medical world. The Wellington Eye Clinic has been involved in many of these new developments over the years like wavefront technology (2001), topography-guided technology (2004) and Pentacam-guided treatments (2005).

Currently, the WEC is taking part in a very prestigious clinical trial with 2 other clinics studying, what is believed to be, the ultimate ablation profile, the shape and dimension of the area to be lasered for laser surgery. The new ablation profile is called “Ray Tracing” and for the first time ever, includes every possible measurement of the patient’s own eye in the calculation of the ablation profile. Currently, in spite of the technology available, ablation profiles are calculated using an eye model that is almost 100 years old and has stood the test of time and worked very well for almost all eyes. With newer developments and technology however, the generic model no longer needs to be used and instead, the patient’s own ocular dimensions are used to provide the ultimate "holy grail" ablation profile that promises to deliver the safest, most accurate and the best visual quality ablation profile to the eye.

The lead investigator is Professor Dr Dr Theo Seiler from the IROC institute in Zurich, Switzerland. Prof Seiler was the very 1st doctor to treat an eye with the excimer laser. He also founded the cross-linking procedure that is currently revolutionising the treatment of keratoconus world-wide. He truly is a pioneer in our field and the father of many of the technologies that have become state of the art in the recent past. The other 2 clinics chosen to be part of the study are the Wellington Eye Clinic in Dublin and the SehKraft Eye Clinic in Cologne, Germany. It is indeed a massive honour to be invited to be part of this ground-breaking work and the quest to make a great procedure even better and safer. We are thrilled to be part of this very unique group and to be able to offer treamtments to our patients that simply are not available anywhere else.

If you have a prescription of more than -4.00 or have astigmatism of more than -2.00, you may qualify for the Ray Tracing procedure. It is a LASIK like any other LASIK except for the fact that the information sent from the computer to the laser is that bit more sophisticated and unique to the individual eye. More than 46 eyes have already been treated at the 3 clinics and the results are as expected, very accurate and resulting in excellent quality of vision.
